SC HOUSE

This project involves the complete refurbishment of 1970s large house overlooking the coast in South Wales.

The original house was initially designed for Hollywood celebrities. It has a very large footprint spread over three floors and includes 9 bedrooms, kitchen, dining room, games area, entertainment rooms and a large spa with pool. The existing building was of the period, with fake arches, stone cladding, mock fireplaces and a greek temple spa and was in need of a complete redesign.

Our clients brief was to retain the footprint but completely redesign it including removing the huge pitched roof, reconfiguring the interior layout, redesigning the exterior and landscaping the gardens.

Our approach internally was to move all the primary rooms such as main bedrooms. living areas and kitchen to the first floor to maximise the views and create double height entrance hall off which everything radiates from. The ground floor accommodates the services areas, cinema, guest rooms, games room, gym, spa and pool. This generated window locations in a random pattern on the facade so we designed a vertical black cladding that would tie them together and produce unified elevations. In contrast to this the pool roof was exaggerated by connecting it to the courtyard landscaping in grey zinc.

Internally we opened up the exterior facade to create a minimal light interior with a subtle shades of a grey concrete floor, vertical timber slats and white contrasting walls and ceilings.

The landscaping has been designed to compliment the dark facades with birch trees, buxus hedges, light grey gravel and grey stone slabs.
